Simple Devotions Today
When temptation comes to me today,
And even if it gives me no time to reflect or resist,
You have already manifested Your gentleness, holiness, and victory
As I previously had been united with Adam so that I could sin without any resolve or pondering, so today I am in Christ in order that I may be patient, kind, or whatever without any resolve, pondering, or resisting on my part.
O Lord, though I have no time to reflect, yet I praise and thank You that my union with Christ is as deep as that union was with Adam.
Our union with Christ is similar to our union with Adam.
Previously, we sinned because were joined to Adam; now we practice righteousness because we are joined to Christ.
Our union with Adam results in sinning without the need of any resolve or effort on our part to bring it about.
Yet this is also true with regard to the life in Christ promised to us by God.
Those who do so — take the commandments of the Lord literally — will doubtless often be brought into difficulties,
Hard to the flesh to bear,
But these will have a tendency to make them constantly feel that they are strangers and pilgrims here,
That this world is not their home,
And thus to throw them more upon God,
Who will assuredly help us through any difficulty into which we may be brought by seeking to act in obedience to His Word.
If we place a soul in the hand of a brother who has no discernment of men, he will not know how to deal with him.
He will only speak according to his subjectivity.
If he has a certain feeling on a certain day, he will speak of this feeling to whomever he meets.
If he has a favorite subject, he will speak to everyone about that subject.
How can such a person do an effective work?
In divinely constituted groups of workers there is no organization.
Authority is exercised among them but such authority is spiritual, not official.
It is an authority based upon spirituality, an authority which is the outcome of a deep knowledge of the Lord, and intimate fellowship with Him.
Spiritual life is the source of such authority.
No compulsion. Direction and submission alike are on the ground of spirituality.
